Gemtek Lends a Helping Hand on 9/21 World Cleanup Day

9/21 is a day dedicated to protecting our oceans worldwide! Marine debris poses a significant threat to the environment and marine life, which led us to participate in the "Let’s Clean Up Our Rivers and Oceans" event organized by the Water Resources Agency of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Despite the event being cut short due to rain, Gemtek employees managed to remove 41.85 kilograms of waste, raising awareness about the importance of protecting our marine ecosystems. Every effort contributes to change, and we are delighted to join hands with volunteers to make a lasting impact on our oceans and the future of our environment! Let’s work together to build a sustainable future, create plastic-free coastlines, and ensure a bright tomorrow!

Gemtek Springs into Action on 9/7 Mile-a-Minute National Weed Control Day

The Mile-a-Minute Weed is a fast-spreading invasive species known for its aggressive vines. Its sprawling patches harm other plants by blocking their access to light, which affects photosynthesis and ultimately kills them—earning it the nickname "ecological killer." Gemtek volunteers teamed up to visit Taiwan's first environmental trust, Nature Valley, where they successfully cleared away 77.8 kilograms of this invasive weed, along with 2.4 kilograms of other waste. During the event, a guide introduced us to various Taiwanese fern species found in the area, and we even got to make moss balls by hand. Through this activity, we learned that Taiwan has the highest density of fern species in the world, thanks to its favorable climate and environment. It was a rewarding experience to join forces with volunteers to help protect our beautiful environment and promote sustainability!

Typhoon Gaemi and Earthquake Relief Fundraising

Widespread mudslides triggered by severe natural disasters had swept through Taiwan’s Hualien and Taitung regions, damaging roadside trees, homes, and metal-roofed structures. The situation was critical, as many tribal communities were cut off from transportation and faced an urgent need for food supplies, putting the well-being of many children and their families at risk. Following the April 3 Hualien-Taitung earthquake, Gemtek responded swiftly by supporting relief efforts through a contribution to the Jiaoer Charity Association. Later, in the wake of Typhoon Khanun, we provided direct food assistance to the Little Sun Caring Association in Xiulin Township, Hualien County, by purchasing and delivering essential supplies. A total of NT$133,000 was raised, supporting 285 children and 18 tribal communities, and reaching approximately 18,000 people.

Gemtek organized a first aid training session led by experienced paramedic Mr. Chih-Wei Yang, who imparted precious knowledge on CPR and AED usage. Through hands-on simulations, participants learned how to handle emergency situations and where to locate AED devices within the company premises. The training included chest compression exercises through group practice, having real-time electronic feedback from a CPR mannequin to monitor compression depth, rate, and recoil.Through these exercises, participants are able to instantly evaluate their performance and improve their technique. In truth, during life-or-death moments, it's often someone nearby who can either save you or be saved. Learning these vital skills can make all the difference, helping to buy valuable time to save a life when every second counts.

Exploring Taiwan’s First Environmental Trust — Nature Valley

On June 29, Gemtek, together with the Taiwan Environmental Information Association, organized an ecological tour at Taiwan’s first environmental trust —Nature Valley. Under the guide’s expert insights, we gained a deeper understanding of Nature Valley's history and the crucial role that environmental trusts play in ecological restoration. As we explored the low mountain habitat, we encountered a rich diversity of wildlife and marveled at the rip rap retaining walls, a testament to the knowledge passed down through generations. The guide detailed the intricate engineering required in constructing these walls, highlighting the wisdom and experience involved. The Nature Valley team even dedicated two years to learning this craft from community elders. Rip rap retaining walls are built from natural stone blocks, forming eco-friendly structures that effectively prevent soil erosion and control drainage. The gaps between the stones are home to a vast variety of creatures, and if you look closely, you might spot numerous little residents tucked away in those crevices! After enjoying a delicious Hakka-style bento lunch, we headed toward the farm to create moss terrariums. Along the way, the guide pointed out various species of Taiwanese ferns growing on the farm, highlighting the fact that Taiwan is also known worldwide as the "Kingdom of Ferns". Before the day ended, we played a fun game where everyone took on the roles of different elements and creatures within an ecosystem. Through this activity, participants of all ages could experience the inherent interconnectedness and co-existence of nature and understand how every part plays an essential role. It was an extraordinary journey to deepen our awareness of sustainability and biodiversity. Thanks to all the colleagues and the Nature Valley team for making this event a success. We very much look forward to our next visit!
